AI for student education

Guidance and resources to support staff in using Generative AI (Gen AI) in student education.

Staff engaged in the development or use of AI in any type of learning activity should ensure that the AI-based learning activity is ethical and conforms to University of Leeds regulations.

Using RAG assessment categories

Considerations when applying a Red / Amber / Green (RAG) category to different types of summative assessment.

Writing a Gen AI statement for assessment

A structure and recommended wording for the written Gen AI statement for assessments that each module requires.

Talking to students

Guidance and resources to support a discussion with students about the use of Gen AI in assessments, including a slide deck and suggestions for navigating students' reactions.

Leeds case studies

Innovative approaches to using Gen AI in teaching and assessment from colleagues at Leeds.

AI detection tools

AI detection tools must not be used under any circumstances.

This is because:

  1. submission of the work to such tools may represent a data security breach
  2. the document being checked becomes available as training data for other AI tools
  3. these tools are significantly inaccurate.

Student misuse of AI

If you suspect a student or postgraduate researcher has submitted work that is generated by AI without making the appropriate declaration, gather the evidence.

Write the reasons why you suspect the student or postgraduate researcher has done this, then submit it with the evidence to the Academic Integrity Lead or Officer for your school or faculty.

Research student guidance

As a research supervisor, your responsibility is to ensure that your students are fully informed of University policies and regulations about ethical and responsible use of AI in their teaching and research work. Students have full responsibility for how they use AI in their learning and research work. Guidance for research postgraduates is being developed.
