Artificial Intelligence position statement
The University of Leeds views the recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as significant, with the potential to transform education, research and operations. Building on our significant AI research portfolio, as we engage with AI and particularly Generative AI, it will be important to embrace our values of inclusivity, integrity, compassion and collaboration while recognising its transformative opportunities.
The University has therefore identified the following guiding principles and ethos that will inform our approach to using (Generative) Artificial Intelligence tools and to developing institutional policies and practices.
Inclusivity and equitable access
The University aims to create an environment where all students, staff and partners can engage with and benefit from AI technologies, ensuring that advancements in AI contribute to minimising potential harm, reducing inequities and the betterment of society. We are committed to fostering a culture of digital fluency and dexterity to develop a capable and confident community of students, staff and partners.
Ethical considerations and integrity
The University is committed to embedding ethical considerations and lawfulness into every aspect of its AI strategy, ensuring sustainability, transparency, fairness and accountability in the design, development, deployment and use of AI.
Collaboration and leadership
The University prioritises inter- and trans-disciplinary partnerships across various sectors to tackle the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, aiming to position itself as a leader in responsible AI research, development and application.
This position statement has evolved from our work recognising the need to engage with AI technologies and the human and cultural issues associated with these technologies, and for us to engage with agility in responding to opportunities and challenges.
Through bold experimentation, strategic investment and a commitment to our values, we will use digital technologies as a force for good. Our values and guiding principles will enable us to shape a future where AI serves the common good and reflects the best of what we stand for as a university.
